About the Harrison Barnes Substack
For more than twenty-five years, I’ve worked inside the legal hiring market—helping attorneys secure positions, advising on pivotal career decisions, and observing how legal careers actually compound over decades. As the founder of BCG Attorney Search and LawCrossing, I’ve placed attorneys in thousands of law firms across the country, provided strategic guidance to lawyers at every stage of their careers, and helped hundreds of thousands of LawCrossing subscribers find jobs.
During that time, I’ve advised and supported thousands of attorneys and witnessed many highly capable lawyers struggle—not because they lacked talent or intelligence, but because they did not understand how the market really works.
Readers have long said that my writing resonates because it reflects real experience and true market dynamics, not platitudes. One follower wrote simply: “The articles and webinars by Harrison Barnes have profoundly changed the direction of my legal career. Thank you so very much.”
Most legal career advice focuses on résumés, interviews, and short-term moves.
Very little addresses the deeper forces that determine long-term success:
practice-area economics
firm politics and internal incentives
timing and specialization
reputation and signaling
geography and leverage
That is what this publication focuses on.
Why I Write This
Much of what I’ve learned does not fit comfortably into recruiting brochures, law school panels, or firm marketing.
It involves uncomfortable truths:
Why some firms systematically limit lawyers’ growth
Why certain practice areas quietly decline
Why lateral moves fail more often than people admit
Why many high performers stall
Why timing matters more than effort in key moments
I write to make these dynamics visible.
My goal is not to motivate.
It is to help you see the terrain clearly.
My Background
I am the founder of BCG Attorney Search, one of the largest legal recruiting firms in the United States, and LawCrossing, the largest and most popular career site exclusively for the legal profession. Over the past two decades, my team and I have worked with attorneys at every level—from law students to senior partners—across virtually every major practice area and market. You can read more about my work and the thousands of placements I have made here.
We make thousands of placements each year and have changed the course of lawyers’ careers by providing access to opportunities, market knowledge, and committed support.
I have also written extensively on legal career topics, and over 170,000 attorneys and law students read my articles on BCG Attorney Search alone each month.
This publication reflects that accumulated perspective.

It assumes intelligence.

Independence
This publication is editorially independent.
While my professional work involves recruiting and advising attorneys, this Substack exists to share insight—not to sell services or promote listings.
Readers should expect candor backed by real experience and outcomes.

A Final Word
Legal careers are shaped by thousands of small decisions made under incomplete information.
Most people make those decisions without a clear view of how the system actually works.
My goal is to help you make them with better information.
If this helps you see your career or your market more clearly, then it is doing its job.
